So, you're sold.

You've finally made the decision to travel to Bora Bora for your honeymoon or vacation!

THE FIRST QUESTION THAT PROBABLY POPS INTO YOUR MIND IS: WHERE TO STAY IN BORA BORA? WHAT ARE THE BEST HOTELS AND PLACES TO STAY IN BORA BORA?

Well, good news! Bora Bora is a small island so you won't have to comb through hundreds of options.

However, this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip, so it can be hard to decide where to stay. Also accommodation is the biggest part of your budget, and unlike other destinations where picking a hotel is just about having a bed, in Bora Bora, you will likely spend most of your time in your resort, so it's better to choose well.

To help you make the best decision for your dream vacation, this guide provides an in-depth overview of the various accommodation options available in Bora Bora.

From all inclusive resorts, luxurious stays to more affordable options, there's something for everyone. Not to mention the best hotel around, there are also unique options that you won't find anywhere else in the world! So, take a deep breath and read on to discover the perfect place to stay for your trip to Bora Bora.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
How to decide?

When deciding where to stay in Bora Bora, start by asking yourself 3 questions:

What is your accomodation budget?

Like a realistic budget - Keep in mind that Bora Bora is not a cheap destination. Most travelers spend around $7000 on accommodation only. Also read ➡️ How Much is a Trip in Bora Bora in 2023?

Do you wish to stay on a motu (islet) or on the main island?

If you are not sure please check this guide first explaining the pros & cons of both options : Staying on the main island VS staying on a motu in Bora Bora : Pro & Cons

Is staying in an overwater bungalow important to you or not?

Pretty straightforward 🙃

MY INSIGHT

Before I show you the different options, here's my ultimate recommendation: If you travel all the way to Bora Bora, spend at least two nights in a motu luxury resort.

Imagine waking up in a luxurious bungalow, surrounded by crystal clear waters, with the sound of the waves as your morning alarm. You can have breakfast on your private terrace, overlooking the stunning lagoon, and then take a dip in the warm waters. Spend the day sunbathing, snorkeling, or kayaking, and then enjoy a romantic dinner on the private beach. This is the true postcard experience that you've been dreaming of.

If you decide to stay on the main island only, you might miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience. While the main island offers its own charm and beauty, it cannot compare to the tranquility and exclusivity of a motu resort. Don't let your dream of Bora Bora be a bit disappointing.

If your budget is tight, you can still enjoy the beauty of Bora Bora by mixing accommodations. You can spend a night or two on the main island and then splurge on a night at a motu resort. And if your budget is veeery tight, you can look into day passes, but be aware that they depend on occupancy rates and are never guaranteed.

But trust me, you must experience a motu resort to have a complete Bora Bora experience. It's worth the investment and will create a lasting memory that you'll cherish forever.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay in Overwater Bungalows

Did you know that the overwater bungalow was invented in French Polynesia? It is no surprise that the country has become famous for this type of accommodation. Staying in an overwater bungalow is a bucket-list travel experience that many travelers journey around the world to enjoy.

Bora Bora is one of the best places to experience this unique type of accommodation. While most top resorts in Bora Bora offer overwater bungalows, there are still some that do not.

As of 2024, the resorts and hotels that offer overwater bungalows in Bora Bora are:

Staying in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora is a highly recommended experience that provides a unique and unforgettable opportunity to be surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific. The tranquil atmosphere of the bungalow is a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The sound of the waves will lull you to sleep every night and you'll wake up every morning to the refreshing ocean breeze.

With direct access to the ocean, you can make the most of your stay by indulging in a variety of aquatic activities. You can go snorkeling right from your own private deck, and immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the underwater world. Additionally, you can enjoy the stunning views of the lagoon and the sunset from the comfort of your over water bungalow. Don't miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make your dream vacation a reality by staying in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay in a resort

Staying at an almost all inclusive resort in Bora Bora is like a dream come true. It's a destination within a destination where you can experience luxury and relaxation at its finest.

The properties in Bora Bora are not just large, but also offer a wide variety of activities and modern amenities, that cater to every type of traveler. Whether you're looking to unwind in a spa, explore the island's rich culture, or simply relax on a private white sand beach, resorts in Bora Bora have something for everyone.

The resorts in Bora Bora are world-renowned for their breathtaking views of the crystal-clear turquoise lagoon and the lush greenery surrounding the properties. Most resorts have several restaurants that offer a variety of cuisines ranging from traditional Polynesian to international. You can also indulge in some retail therapy with shops that offer local handicrafts and souvenirs.

One of the most unique features of the Bora Bora resorts is their inner lagoons. These lagoons are home to a plethora of marine life, making them perfect for snorkeling enthusiasts. The best resorts provide free snorkeling equipment and even have guided tours to help you explore the underwater world.

Most resorts offers overwater bungalows but also beautiful beach villas.

Booking a resort in Bora Bora can be overwhelming. Each resort has its own charm and uniqueness that sets it apart from the others. However, one thing that all the resorts have in common is their commitment to providing guests with unparalleled luxury and hospitality.

MY INSIGHT

Most of the resorts of this list are located on a private islet (motu in Tahitian). Before choosing a resort in Bora Bora, be sure to read my guide explaining the differences between staying at a motu resort versus staying on the main island to avoid any surprises.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay in a hotel on the main island

There are only two property options classified as "Hotels" in Bora Bora: the Maitai Bora Bora and The Royal Bora Bora. They are not luxury hotels. Both hotels feature block-style lodging, and while the prices are significantly lower than the resorts, the amenities do not compare.

Both beachfront property hotels have a free private parking, a very small white sand beach, which can get crowded on some days, and no mountain view. There are only a few lounge chairs and kayaks.

Only Le Royal has a swimming pool, and there is only one restaurant on each property. Those looking for a more diverse culinary experience may need to venture outside the hotels. Neither hotel has a spa or fitness center.

These budget-friendly hotels are suitable for those who plan to spend most of their day exploring the island and just need a comfortable place to crash at night.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay in vacation rental

Bora Bora also offers a variety of private vacation rentals. These range from the most basic accommodations, such as a tent in a garden, to private overwater bungalows, to luxurious villas with infinity pools private terraces overlooking the lagoon.

MY INSIGHT

Before making a booking, it is important to research the area and to understand the pros and cons of each location. For example, while Anau may seem like a good option for a rental, as it is less expensive than other areas, it is also quite far from the city, Matira beach, restaurants, and attractions. It may be worth paying a bit more for a rental that is closer to the action.

Another thing to consider when planning your stay in Bora Bora is transportation. There is no public transportation on the island, so visitors will need to either rely on taxis or rent a car.

While taxis are an option, they can be expensive and limit your ability to explore the beautiful island. By renting a car, you will have the freedom to explore at your own pace and to make the most of your time in Bora Bora.

If you are interested in booking a private vacation rental in Bora Bora, there are many options available on Vrbo. Here are my top picks (with good location) 😊.
Take the time to research and find the perfect rental for your needs and budget.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay on a private island

How about having an island all to yourself? Well, that's possible in Bora Bora.

Until recently, Bora Bora One was the only option to stay on a private islet in Bora Bora. However, this luxury comes at a cost, starting at $150,000 a week. Celebrities from around the world come to stay in this secluded villa. Currently, other super luxurious villas are under construction in Bora Bora, such as the Villa Aqua Maris and Villa Quintessence.

But what if you're not looking to break the bank? There are still a couple of options for you. In fact, a new budget-friendly option, Motu Only You, just opened in 2022, (and for the record I got married there 😉👰🏼) !

Although it may not be as opulent as the other villas, it does have air conditioning and offers the Robinson Crusoe experience you crave. And at prices under $600 per night, it's an affordable option for those on a budget.

Alternatively, consider Motu Ahuna. This beautiful property boasts charming Bali-inspired decor, and with two bungalows, it's perfect for families or groups.

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay on a boat

Cruising the island is no doubt an amazing way to discover French Polynesia, but have you ever considered the idea of staying on a boat during your trip without actually booking an actual cruise?

Not only does it offer a unique experience, but it also allows you to get closer to nature and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of the surrounding environment.

Imagine waking up to the picturesque sunrise above Mont Otemanu with dolphins peacefully swimming around the boat, and spending your day exploring the clear turquoise lagoon. It's truly an adventure of a lifetime ✨🐬.

While staying on a boat certainly has its advantages, it's important to note that, unless you're renting a luxurious yacht, boats and catamarans typically don't have air conditioning, so it can get hot and humid at night.

If you're intrigued by the idea of staying on a boat in Bora Bora, there are several options to consider. So, why not try something different on your next trip to Bora Bora and stay on a boat? It's an experience you'll never forget.

☑ 2 Bedrooms

☑ Sleeps 4
☑ Full board included

Where to stay in Bora Bora :
Stay in a camp site

Believe it or not, you could wake up to the same stunning view as a $2000 St. Regis bungalow… for only $36! That's right, at Motu Ecologique Camping, you can experience the same awe-inspiring scenery without breaking the bank (at all).

Located in Bora Bora, this camping site is the only one on the island. Although the setting is divine, it is important to note that the comfort is limited – it is, after all, a camping site.

There is no air conditioning, so it can get quite hot. Also, there is no Wi-Fi and a limited access to electricity. You can rent a tipi, a tent, or bring your own.

In addition to its affordable prices, the camping site is committed to an eco-friendly approach. This means that most of the resources used to run the site come from nature. For example, water for showers is collected from the rain, and electricity is generated using solar panels.

This not only helps protect the environment but also provides a unique experience for visitors. The camping also offers vegetarian meals three times a day, providing you with a taste of local cuisine.

It is also important to note that boat transfers are not included in the price. Each round of short boat trip back and forth to the main island will cost you $30.

Overall, this is a great option for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path holiday in Bora Bora and who want to completely disconnect from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you are young, adventurous, and don't mind basic accommodations and limited comfort, this is a good option for you. You will have the opportunity to connect with nature, immerse yourself in the local culture, and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

☑ Full board - Vegetarian meals
