And now, there’s an exciting new water activity that you absolutely have to try – the electric foil in Bora Bora!
I was lucky enough to try it out and I have to say, it was an incredible experience. I highly recommend giving it a shot if you’re looking for the ultimate water sports adventure in Bora Bora.
Here is my experience with electric foil in Bora Bora.

What is Electric Foil?
First thing first : What is electric foil? Electric foil, also known as eFoil, is an innovative new way to experience water sports. It consists of a board with a motor and a hydrofoil, which lifts the board above the water.
The hydrofoil allows the board to glide effortlessly over the water, giving the rider a feeling of flying. The eFoil is powered by a rechargeable battery, which can last up to an hour depending on the rider’s weight and speed.
The hydrofoil is also eco-friendly, which means that it does not damage the lagoon like fuel-powered engines. This makes the eFoil a great choice for anyone who wants to enjoy water sports without harming the environment.
My experience with electric foil in Bora Bora
When you book an electric foil session in Bora Bora, the instructor will make it easy for you by coming directly to your resort. If you’re staying at the beautiful St. Regis like I was, for example, Quentin will arrive on his jet ski with the electric foil right on the beach.
Upon your arrival, your guide will provide everything you need to ensure your safety and comfort, including a mandatory life jacket. While a helmet is not mandatory, it is highly recommended for your safety (I regretted not wearing one).
Then Quentin will introduce you to the machine: the electric foil, and explain how it works. It’s going to be an exciting adventure, so get ready to have some fun!
During your entire foiling session, you’ll have full control of the foil, with the instructor following you on the jet ski to make sure everything is going smoothly. If you are having the session with a partner theyāll be on the jetski as well, ready to snap some shots of your best falls ????
You have total control on the speed. It can be hard to change direction at the beginning tho but youāll be in a safe zone with little to no obstacle around. To control the foil, you’ll have the remote control in your hand. Just press the rear button to start the foil, then turn the joystick to accelerate. And if you fall, no worries! The trigger will automatically let go, so there’s no risk of injury.
When first using the machine, the instructor will likely suggest starting on your knees to become comfortable with it, feel your first sensations, and find your balance. Swinging your arms a bit can also be helpful. Once you are ready and going fast enough, shift a little more weight onto the back of the board to ātake offā.
Let me tell you, the feeling of taking off from the water is absolutely exhilarating! It’s like flyboarding, and it really feels like you’re flying over the water. Now, I know it can be tempting to go full speed right from the start to experience the feeling of flying, but trust me, that’s a mistake. You’ll likely end up falling repeatedly, just like I did.
Actually, it’s possible to take off from the water even at a slow speed. You just need to distribute your weight correctly on the board.
Once I was comfortable, I attempted to stand up on my surfboard, with several degrees of success ????.
But something that really helped me was holding the leash of the board, kind of like a horse lanyard (your are not supposed to hold it but it helps when you just get started) and looking away, not at my feet .
After about 40 minutes, I finally managed to stand up. If I could do it, I’m sure you can too! Keep at it and don’t give up! You got this.
My husband – who is a surfer, that helps -, was able to stand up after only 10 minutes, but then had a hard time consistently keeping the board out of the water without wiping out.
It was a great experience, and I would recommend it to anyone. The best part is that you don’t need any previous experience in surfing or wakeboarding, and you don’t have to be a super athlete either (but you’ll definately feel like one ????)
4 Reasons Why Bora Bora Is the Perfect Place to Try Electric Foil
- Calm Waters: First and foremost, the calm waters of the lagoon make it the perfect spot for beginners to try electric foil, as it can be a bit tricky to balance on the board while controlling the electric motor. Even though the waters may not always be so calm, the lagoon of Bora Bora is known to be sheltered from the currents, making it a great spot to try this exciting activity. (even if it wasn’t so calm the day I tried)!
- Clear Water: In addition to calm waters, the clear water of Bora Bora is another reason why it is the perfect location to try electric foil. The water is so clear that you can see the coral and fish beneath you as you glide over it, adding an extra element of excitement to the experience.
- Warm Water: As if that wasn’t enough, the warm water of Bora Bora is yet another reason to try electric foil there. You won’t have to worry about feeling cold during your session, allowing you to focus solely on the thrilling sensation of flying above the water.
- Breathtaking Scenery: But perhaps one of the most compelling reasons to try electric foil in Bora Bora is the breathtaking scenery. The stunning landscape of Bora Bora, with its lush green mountains and turquoise lagoon, creates a magical backdrop for the eFoil ride. The feeling of flying above the water, combined with the breathtaking views, makes eFoil the ultimate experience in Bora Bora.
